Energy-efficient and sustainable solutions
for meeting rooms and learning spaces

Why Sustainability?

Sustainability is an increasingly hot topic in public fora, with millennials and Gen Z leading the debate and putting pressure on politicians and enterprises to change their behavior. Sustainability has been defined as the ability to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. The principles of sustainability can be applied in practice by optimizing activities to use resources efficiently or use resources that can be regenerated.

Companies worldwide are taking sustainability principles to heart and implementing sustainable practices in their operations; starting from their procurement criteria to implementing wide-sweeping changes to their business models and putting sustainability at the center of all their activities.

This phenomenon is also making its presence felt in the AV industry, where there is an increased focus on energy efficiency and sustainable materials. At Biamp, sustainability has always been a central part of our business.

An example is our keypad control systems; designed with durability in mind, these keypads are well-known for their ability to withstand wear and tear and can be installed for more than 10 years without needing to be replaced. Electronic devices with a long product lifetime have a lesser impact on the environment, as emissions of production are distributed along a larger time period.

How to improve and make meeting rooms and learning spaces more sustainable

Selecting high-quality and durable products that do not require frequent replacement is not the only way of making meeting rooms and learning spaces more sustainable. One big factor that defines the sustainability of a product is the amount of resources required to operate it. In the case of electronic equipment, the resource is, of course, electricity.

The Energy Star and the European Energy label are great indications of the energy efficiency of a product. However, regardless of its energy efficiency, a product’s running costs can quickly explode if it is turned on 24/7. There are several smart options that ensure electronic equipment is turned off automatically when not in use, drastically decreasing the energy consumption of meeting rooms or classrooms.

Improve energy efficiency with...

1. Signal detection

AV equipment with signal detection, as the name implies, turns on automatically when the device detects an input source. The devices also turn off automatically when they no longer detect an input source. Examples of such devices could be displays with CEC or the Neets Sound Bar - SB2 with its wake-on-signal functionality.

2. Occupancy sensors

It happens. People rush out of meeting rooms and classrooms and move on to their next task or destination – forgetting to turn off the equipment and the lights before going out. This unfortunate habit can heavily impact an enterprise or education’s institution’s energy bill. Installing a motion or occupancy sensor with an AV control system can be a smart, energy-efficient solution. Such a sensor can be configured to turn off all the equipment in a room automatically after a fixed amount of time without detecting human presence.

3. AV Control Systems

AV control systems can be described as the brain behind your meeting or learning spaces’ AV equipment setup. Control systems can be configured to control all the equipment in a room and enable the user to perform functions from a keypad or touch user interface. A simple way to optimize the energy efficiency of a room is to add an ON/OFF button to the user interface which is connected to all the devices in the room. In that way, users only have one button to press before leaving the room, increasing the odds that they remember to turn off the equipment and saving energy.

4. Scheduling/Timing functions

Some control systems* have timing and scheduling functions that can be used to optimize the energy consumption of a room. For instance, the control system could be configured to turn off all the equipment automatically at 17:00, after the office or school is closed.
